Total Return Analyzer

A distribution rate is not a return. This measures what a fund actually produced — cumulative distributions set against the change in NAV over the same window.

What does a total return figure include?

Total return combines two components: the cumulative distributions received over the holding period, and the change in NAV across the same window. Many high-yield funds advertise distribution rates that look spectacular in isolation but mask meaningful NAV erosion. The analyzer above shows how much of the return came from distributions versus price change — a 50% annualized distribution rate paired with a 30% NAV decline is a very different investment than a 50% distribution with flat NAV.

YieldMax MSTR Option Income Strategy ETF (MSTY) is issued by YieldMax. Sells call options on MSTR to generate weekly income. Payout depends on MSTR's implied volatility. That strategy directly shapes the gap between headline yield and real yield: option-premium and covered-call funds tend to show large gaps, while traditional dividend ETFs and index funds usually show small ones. How wide that gap becomes from here depends heavily on MSTR’s price path and volatility. Those, in turn, depend on the company and the expectations already priced into its shares. Koyfin lets you test that view against its results and market expectations 20% off for YieldMaxCalc readers.

For the detail behind each payment, see the MSTY dividend history. To project how future MSTY distributions compound under DRIP, open the MSTY dividend calculator.

Move from historical return to a forward view

This page measures what MSTY has already returned. What comes next will depend heavily on MSTR: its price path, its volatility and how much option premium it creates for the fund to collect. Building a forward view also means comparing the fund with the stock itself, its peers and the broader alternatives. Koyfin supports those comparisons with multi-ticker charts, reinvested-return overlays and portfolio analysis.
