What does the AMLP total return include?
AMLP total return combines two components: the cumulative distributions you received from AMLP over the holding period, and the change in NAV (share price) across the same window. Many high-yield funds advertise distribution rates that look spectacular in isolation but mask meaningful NAV erosion. The analyzer above shows exactly how much of your AMLP return came from distributions versus price change — a 50% annualized distribution rate paired with a 30% NAV decline is a very different investment than a 50% distribution with flat NAV.
Alerian MLP ETF (AMLP) is issued by ALPS. Tracks the Alerian MLP Infrastructure Index — midstream energy master limited partnerships that transport, store, and process oil and gas (Enterprise Products, MPLX, Energy Transfer, Plains All American). Structured as a C-corp, so investors get a 1099 rather than the K-1 that direct MLP ownership triggers — why the expense ratio runs ~0.85-1.0%, higher than most passive ETFs. Forward yield ~7.8%, quarterly distributions. That strategy directly shapes the gap between headline yield and real yield: option-premium and covered-call funds tend to show large gaps, while traditional dividend ETFs and index funds usually show small ones.
