How TLT generates income
TLT generates income the old-fashioned way: by holding bonds and distributing the interest they pay. The fund invests in ishares 20+ year treasury bond, passing the coupon payments through to shareholders as monthly distributions.
Unlike covered-call or options-based ETFs, there's no options strategy involved — the yield comes directly from the interest on the underlying bonds. This means distributions are more predictable and there's no return-of-capital (ROC) component to worry about for tax purposes. The distributions are generally taxed as ordinary income.
TLT is often used as a cash management tool or emergency fund vehicle, offering better yield than a savings account while maintaining high liquidity and minimal price volatility.
